TUF 15 coaches Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber to headline UFC 148 on July 7 in third Championship bout

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FaberUrijah_180_2.jpg

For the second straight year, a Bantamweight Championship bout between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber will headline the UFC’s Independence Day weekend event, as UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta announced on Twitter that their coaches battle for The Ultimate Fighter 15 will headline UFC 148 on July 7.

Cruz’s sole career loss came against Faber in their first fight back in 2007, and he got his chance to avenge the loss last summer at UFC 132, defeating Faber by decision in that card’s main event. He followed that win up with a title defense over Demetrious Johnson in October.

After a close second fight with Cruz, Faber bounced back with a dominating victory over former Champion Brian Bowles in November, setting him up for another shot at Cruz.

The two rivals will coach the debut season of The Ultimate Fighter on FX, which will air live on Friday nights for a 12-week season. They’ll conduct their fight camp in conjunction with the show, and with a July 7 meeting it appears they’ll have a couple of weeks afterward to close out their preparations before meeting on pay-per-view.

Penick’s Analysis: With the exposure on The Ultimate Fighter, along with Faber’s dominant win over Bowles, the UFC will be hoping that this event draws better than their second fight did last summer. That fight was Cruz’s first in the UFC, and Faber’s first headliner in the UFC, so neither were established with the UFC audience yet. With a couple of fights each in the organization now, and the exposure on TUF, that should change for this summer.

What if? Dana White talks Roy Nelson?s future

There’s no doubt the most popular man at UFC 143 was Roy Nelson. For that reason, he’s going to stick around. After his loss against Fabricio Werdum, he’s now 3-3 with the UFC.

When asked about Nelson’s future, Dana White isn’t ready to give up on “Big Country,” he still wonders if the fighter is cheating himself by not being in tip top condition.

“He’s tough man, he’s so tough. One of the toughest guys I’ve ever seen … ever. The guy brings it. He comes to fight,” said White.

Nelson shed some of excess weight and fought Werdum at 246 pounds, but it sounds like White would like to see drop even more.

“I’ve been telling Roy forever, if Roy took himself serious … the schtick was funny for a while, but going in at 265 with a frame that doesn’t carry 265 makes no sense when you’re a professional fighter or a professional athlete of any kind,” White said. He got his weight down [but] you wonder what he could do if he really, really trained and got into it.”

Nelson lost a unanimous decision to Werdum, but had his moments early in the fight. When it came time to press on the gas pedal, Nelson didn’t have the energy.

“If he was in good enough shape to keep that kind of pace he would win more fights,” said White.

When asked about Nelson’s punching power disappearing if he drop down into the 230′s, White didn’t think it would take away too much.

“You either have [punching power] or you don’t. You got these guys that have knockout power, then guys that don’t.”

Nelson clearly put in good work to drop from 265 to 246, let’s hope he can shed a little more, be able to go three hard rounds and take out heavyweights who legitimately in the top 10.

MMA Top 10 Middleweights: Intrigue Grows at 185 Pounds

by Michael David SmithAnderson Silva defended his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 126.We haven’t updated our rankings of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts in quite some time because, frankly, Anderson Silva has made it a boring division.

That’s not to say Silva is boring: When he’s on his game, he’s as exciting as any athlete this sport has ever seen. And it’s not to say the other fighters in the division are boring: There have been plenty of good middleweight scraps over the last few months.

But ranking the middleweight division can get boring because not much changes: It’s always Silva on top, and a familiar cast of characters competing for the right to be Silva’s next victim.

But there are some indications that the middleweight division in mixed martial arts might be getting a little more interesting. Yushin Okami is finally scheduled to get the title shot that was promised to him months ago, Chael Sonnen is finally getting close to being cleared for a return, and the addition of Strikeforce middleweights (starting in July with Jason Mayhem Miller and likely including Strikeforce champ Jacare Souza soon) may inject some new blood into the middleweight class.

So now is a good time to update our list of the Top 10 middleweights in mixed martial arts, keeping an eye on what’s ahead for Silva and the other top fighters.

Bellator Champ Zach Makovsky to make first title defense against Eduardo Dantas at Bellator 65 in Atlantic City

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_6.jpg

Bellator Bantamweight Champion Zach Makovsky won the season three Bellator tournament to become the organization’s first 135 lb. Champion. But with no bantamweight tournament in season four, Makovsky was relegated to two non-title fights in 2011.

However, the organization crowned a new tournament winner during season five, with 23-year-old Brazilian Eduardo Dantas earning a shot at Makovsky and the title. That fight is now set, as Bellator announced on Friday that Makovsky will defend the belt against Dantas at Bellator 65 from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on April 13.

“Our bantamweight division has been electrifying and has provided some of the best Bellator moments,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney on Friday. “Zach and Eduardo are two of the greatest bantamweights in MMA today so this should be a really spectacular fight. We always have a packed house whenever we head out to Atlantic City, and I expect nothing less on April 13.”

Dantas earned his shot with wins over Bellator tournament vets Wilson Reis and Ed West before defeating Alexis Vila by decision in the finals. The three-fight run moved his current winning streak to six fights, and brought his career record to 13-2.

“I’m here at Bellator to win the Bantamweight Championship,” Dantas said. “I plan to not only win the title, but to keep it for many years to come.”

To do that, he’ll have to take out the supremely talented 29-year-old Champion. Philadelphia native Makovsky holds a 14-2 overall record, and has won six-straight fights inside of the Bellator cage. He’s won eight straight overall, and has no intention on slowing down.

“I want to dominate everyone I compete against, but at the same time, I don’t feel like I have to make any kind of statement,” Makovsky said. “I just want to continue getting better and do the best I can every time I enter the cage. I don’t pay attention to the rankings because I feel like that’s going to put extra pressure on me. I just look forward to defending my belt on April 13.”

Gus Johnson’s Contract Up at CBS

by Michael David SmithGus Johnson, the lead mixed martial arts play-by-play man for CBS who has called many of the most-watched fights in the sport’s history, is reportedly leaving the network.

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated reports that Johnson, who’s best known for calling college football and the NFL, is leaving after failing to come to terms on a new contract with the network. UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that while Johnson’s contract with CBS has expired, it’s still possible he could reach a new deal.

It’s not clear whether Johnson is also out at Showtime, where he has been both a boxing and MMA play-by-play voice. Johnson will still be part of Saturday night’s Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley pay-per-view broadcast, but it seems unlikely that Johnson would stick around at Showtime, which a division of the CBS Corporation, for long.

PENICK’S BLOG: Thoughts on Nick Diaz’s drug test failure out of UFC 143

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Staff08Penick_120_45.jpg

Nick Diaz’s positive test for marijuana at UFC 143 has brought out a wide variety of reactions today. The most curious response to me has been those jumping to the “should athletic commissions even test for marijuana?” campaign.

The problem with that response – and the defense of Diaz’s marijuana use in this situation because he has a “legal prescription” for it in California – is that it’s not at all what the issue is here. Whether you believe or not that marijuana should be decriminalized is irrelevant to the conversation.

Do I believe Nick Diaz toked up in the locker room before going to the cage on Saturday night in Las Vegas? Of course not. But even if he has a prescription to use it in his daily life, he knows what the rules are, and he knows that it’s something that stays in his system that could be caught. In fact, he’s outright bragged in the past about his ability to pass a drug test like this, and it’s very likely that he’s done just that in many of the fights where he’s been tested.

That fact made him a ticking time bomb. The simple fact is that marijuana use is prohibited under the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s rules, regardless of its legality for use in a fighter’s everyday life. It stays in the system for quite some time, so whether Diaz smoked a month before the fight, a week before, or the day of, the drug test result isn’t necessarily going to be able to make that determination.

And again, this isn’t about whether or not Diaz should have a legal right to smoke marijuana. It’s about him knowingly partaking in something that is already against the rules and getting caught for it. The rules have been in place, and he can’t feign ignorance when he’s been popped for it before.

If he doesn’t want to abide by the rules set forth for the sport he’s competing in, or if he simply can’t abide by them, then he’s not in the right profession. He won’t take it that way, and him and his most ardent supporters will play the victim card in this situation, but this is a case of him not following the rules as set forth by the commission. That’s the only story here. He broke the rules as written, and he’ll be punished because of that fact.

Carlos Condit pulls upset on Nick Diaz to take UFC interim welterweight title, loser says he?s done with fighting

LAS VEGAS — Nick Diaz is brilliant at playing mind games with his opponents, but it didn’t work on any level tonight.

Carlos Condit never took the bait before or during the fight, stuck to the gameplan and outsmarted Diaz to get himself a share of the UFC welterweight title.

Condit moved beautifully all night and landed 60-plus kicks. He never stood in front of Diaz for more than a few seconds. It all added up to a unanimous decision victory, 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46, in the main event of UFC 143 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

It was a difficult fight to score. Judge Cecil Peoples scored it 49-46 (Condit 1, 2, 4, 5), Patricia Morse Jarman had 49-46 (Condit 1, 2, 4, 5) and Junichiro Kamijo 49-46 (Condit 1, 3, 4). Aside the from the fourth round, each round was razor thin.

When the decision was read, Diaz was shocked. His behavior is nearly impossible to predict, but he threw everyone for a loop during his postfight discussion with UFC analyst Joe Rogan. He complained about the decision and then said he’s had it with the sport.

“I’m not going to accept the fact that was a loss. That ain’t right. I pushed him back all fight. I walked him down. Carlos is a great guy. I’m happy for him and his family, but I think I’m done with this MMA,” said Diaz.

Diaz (26-8, 7-5 UFC) appeared to be the aggressor all night, but was it “effective aggression” as the unified rules state in detailing how to score a fight? Condit’s constant move stymied Diaz, who was outlanded outlanded 159-117 according to Fight Metric. Compustrike had total strikes 146- 110 in favor of Condit. It also said kicks landed were 104-19 for Condit.

The loss ended an 11-fight, four-year win streak. Diaz is just 28 years old and one of the rising stars of the sport. He’s got a bright future with massive earning potential.

“You guys pay me way too much, but I don’t think I’m going to get enough to keep going in this. I don’t need this [expletive],” Diaz said. “I pushed him backwards the whole time. I landed the harder shots. He ran the whole time. He kicked me in my leg with little baby leg kicks. I don’t want to play this game no more. I’m out of this [expletive].”

Condit (28-5, 5-1 UFC) picks up the UFC’s interim welterweight belt. After undergoing surgery for a torn ACL, The champion Georges St-Pierre is sidelined until late 2012. Before the fight, UFC president Dana White couldn’t say for certain if the winner tonight would sit out 8-9 months until GSP is ready.

Coming into tonight’s tilt, Condit was sizable underdog at plus-185. A possible Diaz-GSP fight was expected to be one of the biggest UFC fights of 2012. A St-Pierre-Condit fight won’t have the same sizzle, but it should be a helluva brawl based on what the new interim champ showed tonight.

The judges made the right call. The first round was tough to call with Condit starting out strong and Diaz closing well. Condit ran a little too much in the second and lost the round. He corrected his mistake from there and was simply brilliant over the final three rounds. Diaz stalked him for 15 more minutes eating kick after kick. In most cases, when Diaz tried to settle and throw punches, Condit was nowhere to be found. He scooted out of the way in when it looked like a classic Diaz 10-12 punch flurry was coming. The early work to Diaz’s legs really sapped him late. He looked a step slow in the final round.

The fight didn’t end without drama and that’s where Diaz backers may have their biggest complaint. With 1:23 left, Diaz got standing back control, immediately dropped to the ground and quickly got his hooks in.

With 1:02 left, Diaz changed his legs to a body lock. He work for the choke, but never got his hands in position. Diaz had his right arm across the face, but Condit did a good job of tucking his chin. With around eight seconds left, Diaz threatened with an armbar attempt, but Condit was too slick and slipped out instantly. Some thought that was enough to take the round. It’s hard call after watching Condit make Diaz look desperate and slow for the first three and half minutes of the round.

Carlos Condit will sell you the suit off his back

Carlos Condit is a man of many interests. He is a father, a fighter, a foodie, and purveyor of the finest men’s suits. Seriously.

Condit owns Dressed to Kill, a men’s clothier in his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M. The suit Condit wore to Thursday’s press conference comes from Dressed to Kill.

See how nice “The Natural Born Killer” looks? And that suit can be yours. You can be dressed just like a top pro fighter and still look good enough to impress Don Draper. If the fight goes Condit’s way on Saturday night, he’ll want to head to his store and find something that complements a shiny, black and gold belt.

UFC 143 video: Alex Cacares loves the big time, but misses the days of backyard brawling

LAS VEGAS — The crowds, money, adulation, safety precautions are all dynamite for 23-year-old Alex Cacares as he fights for the biggest mixed martial arts promotion in the world, but the Miami native misses the days of what appears to be a much more barbaric mode of fighting – the backyard brawl.

Those types of fights have been going down since the beginning of time. They recently became headliners again with the growth of YouTube and exposure for guys like Kimbo Slice in the Miami area.

As a hulking stack of muscle and intimidation, Slice fit the part. Cacares is slender and appears to be non-threatening, but when you hear him talk about his teenage experience with those pit fights you realize the kid loves to fight anywhere, anytime.

“I got into it because I was underage to get into professional fighting, “Cacares told Cagewriter just a few days before his 11 pro fight at UFC 143. “I was doing amateur fights at the time. I really wanted to get into a professional fighting, minimize the hand protection, no shin guards and really see what I could do.”

The UFC currently uses four ounce gloves which are tiny compared to boxing’s eight and 10 ounce models. Cacares still prefers the more primitive style of using bare-knuckles. “I believe bare knuckle hurts less than wearing these UFC gloves. I’ve been hit by both  and I’d rather be hit by the bare knuckle,” Cacares said the gloves increase the surface area of the fist and seem to make the punches stick more. “The bare knuckle slides off more. When you get hit by the whole glove it gives you that little ringing sound.”

Cacares did his first backyard brawl at 17, making between $300 and $600 per fight. If he won, he’d get spiffed by the winning bettors. He’d take home as much as $800 on some nights.

“It’s a crazy experience. The crowd might not be as big as UFC crowd, but man they sound really loud because they’re literally two feet away from you and we’re fighting in a chicken cage. It’s kind of like a pit fight, a dog fight. But it was a good experience,” said Cacares.

He’s clearly fearless. There were no structured weight classes, no rounds, no time limits, no doctor to look at cuts and the fights went to the finish. You win when your opponent quits, can’t continue or you submit him.

Things are different now in many ways. Most importantly, Cacares is actually fighting guys his size. He fought on Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” at 155 pounds, but he barely walks around above 150. Now he’s more comfortable down at 135 and can be a bully in the division.

Cacares was excellent in his UFC bantamweight debut against Cole Escovedo. On Saturday, Cacares (6-4, 1-2 UFC) takes a good step up against Edwin Figueroa. The shorter Figueroa is the only guy recently who’s given phenom Michael McDonald a fight, going the distance in losing a decision. The promotion is so high on MacDonald that he’s been throw in there with former bantamweight champ Miguel Torres in February. If Cacares takes out Figueroa, that’s a big notch on his belt.

Fouls lead to an Alex Caceres loss while Matt Brown is back on track at UFC 143

LAS VEGAS — Twice, Alex Caceres landed kicks to Edwin Figueroa’s groin that looked like he was attempting to nail 60-yard field goals. But they cost him an extra point and the decision in their bantamweight bout on Saturday at UFC 143.

Caceres landed his first kick early in the first round at Mandalay Bay, which sent Figueroa rolling across the mat in agony. Referee Herb Dean issued Caceres a “strong warning” after Figueroa signaled he was able to continue.

The rest of the first round was wild, as Figueroa connected with a head kick and nearly finished the fight, but Caceres rallied and went for several submission attempts late in the round.

Midway through the second, Caceres struck again. This time, Dean took the highly unusual step of docking the fighter two points for the infraction as the fight continued.

Figueroa won round three on all three cards. The scores were 28-27 across the board, two for Figueroa and one for Caceres. If there had been a standard one-point deduction, the bout would have been a majority draw, with two 28-28 cards and a 29-27 for Caceres.

“I felt like it was a hard earned paycheck,” said Figueroa. “He was a good fighter. I had to dig deep for this one.  He came out and landed a few shots early.  It was a tough fight but I came out the winner.”

The loss was the third in four fights for Caceres, the former “TUF” standout. Figueroa was won two straight.

“Immortal” Brown back on track.

Matt Brown may or may not be “Immortal,” as his nickname suggests, but he sure has managed to hang around in the UFC’s welterweight division.

Brown has grinded his way through 11 UFC fights since 2008, showing promise, but never quite building enough momentum to break through. But he’s hoping to turn the page in 2012 after scoring a knockout victory over Chris Cope at UFC 143 Saturday.

“That’s exactly what I need to be doing,” said Brown (13-11) “I got away from who I am.”

Brown controlled the action in round one against a tentative Cope (5-4), but never got an opening to do serious damage. That changed early in round two, when he feigned a left, followed with a big right hand that connected, then floored Cope with a left hook. He landed a few more shots on the ground before referee Kim Winslow stopped it at 1:19.

The win came as a relief to Brown, who had lost four of his previous five fights. “I’ve got a right hand to knock out anybody, I hope to see more of that.”

Dustin Poirier schools young Max Holloway with wicked submission at UFC 143

LAS VEGAS — Dustin Poirier dealt with Max Holloway’s standing onslaught for close to two minutes. That’s when he had enough. Time for Plan B.

Poirier took the fight to the ground and taught the 20-year-old a lesson. He mounted him, tried an armbar, switched it to a triangle and then wound up getting the submission finish with a nifty armbar from a topside triangle at 3:23 of the first round at UFC 143.

Give Holloway some credit. He took the fight on less than a month’s notice against a guy who’s one of the brightest prospects in the division. Poirier’s finish is currently the lead candidate for Submission of the Night. That could be good for $65,000.

UPDATE: Poirier got the nod for Sub of the Night and the $65,000.

“I never underestimated Max. I was in his shoes before.  He’s a tough fighter and good kickboxer.  He was quicker than I expected though and hit me with a few shots,” Poirier said. “I came here to get a win, and I got the finish.  I’m one step closer to being a champion.”

Holloway’s standup attack was pretty slick.

Working behind both hands, some flying knees and plenty of kicks, he had Poirier on his heels. Poirier went for his first takedown with 3:06 left. He got it easily and lifted the slim Holloway into the air before slamming him to the floor. He moved to mount immediately. Poirier simply overpowered Holloway on the ground pinning his arms down on several occasions.

UFC 143 Results: Carlos Condit captures Interim Welterweight Championship in decision over Nick Diaz

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

ConditCarlos_GG180_3.jpg

Carlos Condit executed a very good gameplan against Nick Diaz on Saturday night at UFC 143, capturing the Interim UFC Welterweight Championship with by unanimous decision in a hard fought five-round bout.

Condit employed a smart strategy of circling away from Diaz and counter-striking, and as the fight wore on he began increasing his output, landing combinations as Diaz got in close and circling away from Diaz’s counters. The strategy had Diaz so off base that by the fifth and final round he went away from his striking game and tried to pull Condit into a ground battle.

Diaz was so off his game that he landed just 110 strikes overall in a five round fight. His offense was completely neutralized by Condit’s gameplan, and he wasn’t able to overwhelm him the way he had many of his previous opponents. Condit’s performance has already been derided by some as “running away” the whole fight, but he refused to do what many others had done in simply standing there allowing Diaz to hit them.

Ultimately, Condit took rounds 1, 3, and 4, with two judges also giving him round 2. The win sets him up for a fight with Georges St-Pierre later this year to unify the Welterweight Championships.

Penick’s Analysis: There’s going to be a lot of debate, controversy, and vitriol spewing over the next several days over this fight, but Condit absolutely had more than a case for round one, a case for round two, and he took rounds three and four clearly in my book. Simply moving forward in a fight doesn’t mean you’re winning, and Condit was the one throwing strikes and avoiding Diaz’s counters. He also didn’t let himself get boxed into a corner by Diaz, so he wasn’t getting lit up throughout the fight like many of Diaz’s other opponents. Plain and simple, Diaz didn’t do nearly enough to make that a victory for himself, while Condit provided more offensive output and neutralized him. That’s a win for Condit, and a deserved one at that.

UFC 143 victor Josh Koscheck reveals split from AKA due to now former coach Javier Mendes

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JoshKoscheck_150_3.jpg

After a very close split decision win over Mike Pierce at UFC 143 on Saturday night, Josh Koscheck revealed that he had left his longtime team at the American Kickboxing Academy. That led many to believe that a fight between Koscheck and longtime teammate – and perennial top welterweight – Jon Fitch might be a possibility.

However, in a new interview with MMAWeekly.com, Koscheck opened up about his reason for leaving AKA, and made it clear there’s no rift between he and his training partners themselves.

“First and foremost, my teammates over there at AKA in San Jose are my brothers,” Koscheck said. “I love those guys. 8 years, we’ve basically trained ourselves and got us to the level that we are and we’ve all relied on each other and those guys are forever going to be my teammates, I’m forever going to train with them, but I’m just not going to train in San Jose with them.”

“I’ll invite them and I’ll pay them to come to train in Fresno with me when I have fight camps and that type of thing. Those guys are my family. Bob Cook, Dave Camarillo, I’m still going to be managed by Zinkin Entertainment, Bob Cook will still be in my corner and coaching me, he’ll come here a couple days a week and train with me, Dave Camarillo will come here a couple days, and I think I’m going to be better off.”

Turns out, there is really only one thing – actually, one person – that has caused Koscheck to sever ties with AKA itself.

“There’s one reason I’m leaving San Jose AKA and that’s because of Javier Mendez,” Koscheck said. “He’s the only reason I’m leaving that gym. It almost hurts me because I love training with those guys, I love training with (Jon) Fitch, and (Mike) Swick and Cain (Velasquez) and (Daniel) Cormier, and (Justin) Wilcox and all those guys, they are my brothers, and it hurts me to have to make this decision for me because the fact that it’s like splitting up the family.”

Koscheck said his issues with Mendes – who founded AKA and is one of the head trainers at the gym – go back all the way to 2008, and a fight he took with Thiago Alves on short notice. He said Mendes’ interviews after the fight, where he laid blame on Koscheck for not following the gameplan, were the first sign to him that something wasn’t right. But it wasn’t just that one instance, and it led Koscheck to grow increasingly frustrated.

“I’ve lost a lost of respect for Javier Mendez as a coach, as a person,” Koscheck said. “Because if you go back and listen to the history of the interviews of him after AKA guys have lost, the interviews he does, go back and look at the Cain Velasquez [fight], go back and look at the Josh Koscheck (fight), the other guys on that team, and see if you can find interviews where he refers to ‘Oh I did my job’ to make himself look good and they didn’t do theirs. That’s not a coach.”

Koscheck is still working with Dave Camarillo, as well as Bob Cook, and made it clear his only issue is with Mendes himself.

“Bob Cook and Dave Camarillo they’re always responsible and they take their share of wins and losses and that’s what you’ve got to love about those guys,” Koscheck said. “Bob Cook and Dave Camarillo, they’re loyal. You lose, guess what it was all of our faults, they take the brunt of that. Javier is more concerned about the camp, and looking good, and who’s going to be the next guy to bring him money. I just can’t be around that anymore.”

“There was a lot of poison going on around there and I’m really disappointed because we had a good thing going. It was a good thing and I think people’s egos got in the way. Well, not people just Javier, his ego got in the way, and too many cameras in the gym and him trying to build himself up and his brand, his AKA brand, which is fine I understand that, but it should never take precedence over training guys. As a head coach of a gym and he says he’s the man, he’s the boss over there, he should have the responsibility to make the fighters as best as we possibly could be, but he never did that.”

Ultimately, Koscheck says the only thing that’s going to change for him is the location of his training. He will continue working with his teammates, and several of the same trainers, but it will be at his gym in Fresno.

As he said, “I’m still going to train with them, but I will never step foot in AKA in San Jose again.”

Penick’s Analysis: Fighters put a lot of faith into their trainers, believing their best interests are being looked after in their careers, and sometimes that doesn’t wind up being the case. Clearly Koscheck felt that was the case in this situation, and it has caused a contentious transition. For a lot of fans it will come as a disappointment that it’s only the one person causing the split, because the prospects of former teammates fighting always gets people interested, but here it’s just Koscheck trying to do what he feels is best for him.

Ramsey Nijem on Game Planning for Next Fight With Clay Harvison

by Michael David SmithWith the first round of fights all out of the way on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, Ramsey Nijem has advanced to the quarterfinals and learned on this week’s episode that he’ll be taking on Clay Harvison next. In his weekly interview with MMAFighting.com, Nijem said that was a matchup he liked — but not the matchup he requested.

Nijem talked about his game plan for Harvison, which member of Brock Lesnar‘s team he would have preferred to fight, and how he felt about the wild card fight between Chuck O’Neil and Javier Torres.

Nijem also weighed in on the annual coaches’ challenge, which this year meant Lesnar and Junior dos Santos going through an obstacle course on Fertitta Field at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas.
